Finding My Niche

Hey, y’all! Austin here, back for another insight into my experiences as an intern for the RiverKings. I teased the subject of this post last time I wrote, about moving more toward game operations. The techniques and skills I have learned this past month by actually doing things like creating flyers, videos, and brain storming theme related activities stretch far beyond what I could of learned by reading a book about it.

The very first thing I have started learning was the ins and outs of Adobe Creative Suite. I had some prior experiences in past employment in this area, but so far I have been stretching my knowledge with the help of Bradley in Game Ops. We have used my idea of bathroom flyers for promotional use of our upcoming games and ticket deals such as Princess Night and, soon to be, Playoff Packages. I have been given responsibility for creating these flyers and have presented my finished product to Bradley. He has been great about not just tweaking things, but making me critically think about why such changes need to be made and what is the best way to create visuals within the program. I am now contemplating when would be the best time for me to take an Adobe Creative Suite class at FSU before I graduate as it would help me tremendously in finding a job in the future.

Sitting in front of a computer and editing flyers has become fun for me, but it is not my only new skill. Bradley and I have been brainstorming promotional videos for each up coming themed night and filming the players. We came up with an idea for a series of “Ask a RiverKing” videos where we ask players questions revolved around our themes such as Witches and Wizards Night. I was tasked to come up with questions for the videos that needed to be constructed in a way to not have one word answers. Having open questions allowed for a more engaging video that fans would love, so I began research for Conservation Night and Witches and Wizards to help construct meaningful material to talk about. Not being a Harry Potter fan I had to pair up with fellow intern Andrew and get him to help with questions and he did an excellent job with Harry Potter related questions. Because of all this, I am now understanding what is aesthetically pleasing in video interviews as well as the basics of setting up times that work with the players and our schedule.

Another interesting and necessary part of my job is learning how to do the public address announcer and emcee scripts. The scripts are something that Bradley constructed at the beginning of the year, but needs to be updated for every game. I am just now learning these updates, along with the game sheet for the Landers Center and Crown Crew to know what needs to be done and when. It is a vital role for in-game operations that allows me to understand how much actually does happen with the logistics of sporting events.

Specializing more in game operations for this internship is better than what I could have hoped for. I have a sense of pride every time I hear a song that I picked out, a trivia question I came up with, or seeing a video or flyer I helped create being enjoyed by fans. These experiences are why I wanted to come to an organization like the RiverKings: to be hands on, with responsibility and learn the most I can. As we make our push for a high seed in the playoffs, I can am realizing how much pre-planning is involved in sports. Until next time, Go RiverKings!
