"The Best Part is When They Win"

SENATOBIA, Miss. -- The RiverKings may be in a bit of a funk, but if you saw Jacob McMullen's face when Coach Derek Landmesser walked into his Senatobia, Miss. home, you would have never guessed it.

McMullen, 9, was lying in his bed watching Spongebob before his mom told him he had a visitor who wanted to see him. Before the 'Kings' coach could make it through the doorway, Jacob already knew who it was.

"Hi, Derek!" he yelled out.

Jacob may have known who the coach was, but he hasn't had the chance to catch many RiverKings' games in person this season. At the age of two, he was diagnosed with McCune-Albright syndrome, a disease that leaves him susceptible to bone fractures and wheelchair bound. He recently underwent a procedure that has left him in a full-body cast, confined to his bed for a bulk of the day.

Three years ago, Jacob had the opportunity to skate at the roller rink at the Hernando Civic Center with Coach Landmesser. Jacob had a picture framed of that day and gave it to the RiverKings' coach with the words "This was the best day of my life" hand-written at the bottom of the image that currently stands in the coach's office. Landmesser returned the favor this time by presenting Jacob with an autographed RiverKings jersey, a Face Off Field Trip workbook and a team-signed goalie stick.

When asked about his favorite part about the RiverKings, Jacob didn't mention the personal visit or his new stuff.

"The best part," he started, "is when they win."

Jacob is a true inspiration and fan. You can never win all the games, but the wins are the games you remember the most. Life is full of challenges with its ups and downs. We have to always focus on the ups, and let that thrill take us over the downs, to the next up. Big thanks to the front office for sharing Jacob's story and inspirational thoughts with us. Go Kings!
