SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The RiverKings hosted their 12th Face Off Field Trip, presented by Belhaven University, at the Landers Center on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Over 3,700 students attended the game sponsored in major part by Belhaven and fred’s Super Dollar, which included educational activities meant to foster an interest in both education and hockey.

Jennifer Blassingame, a teacher at the Shrine School whose special-needs students attended the event, said she and her students look forward to participating in next year’s event.

“Having students with disabilities is always a challenge when going into the community,” she said. “However, this was anything but a challenge. The Face Off Field Trip was one of the most awesome community-based instruction activities that Shrine School has participated in. None of our students had ever had an opportunity to attend a professional sporting event. All of the students and staff commented on how much fun everyone had.”

The ‘Kings defeated the Huntsville Havoc 4-3 in a shootout in front of a crowd of Mid-South-area elementary and junior-high students, each of whom received educational workbooks containing hockey-related math, spelling, geography, and English questions.

“We were pleased to have such a diverse group of sponsors, many of whom were interested in promoting specific educational content,” said Whitley Rives, RiverKings Office Manager. “For instance, Travelennium and Mississippi Geographic Alliance both sponsored geography activities. State Farm Agent Stephanie Morris’ page spotlighted bullying awareness. Fox Ridge Pizza’s page used a fictional account of a visit by our coach to promote solving fractions and geometry problems. Our sponsors really helped make the workbook content more fun.”

Other workbook sponsors included: Super Drugs, the Noah’s Gift Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, Memphis Computer Shop, Yo’Sweetz Dessert Café, the Mid-South Ice House, Emergency Mobile Health Care, Rock 103, the Chickasaw Council of Boy Scouts of America, Memphis-Area Girl Scouts, Hard Rock Café and First Tennessee.

Yo’Sweetz Dessert Café is also sponsoring a creative writing contest for students who attended the Face Off Field Trip. Students must submit a short essay on their favorite aspect of the Face Off Field Trip. The student whose response is chosen will win a Yogurt party sponsored by Yo’Sweetz for his entire class, including a special appearance by a RiverKings player. The teacher of the winning student will choose a date in March for the yogurt party. Deadline to submit is Tuesday, February 19.
