MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mississippi RiverKings mascot Sheldon ventured out to Shelby Farms for March of Dimes annual “March for Babies” event.

Over 3,000 Mid-South participants walked to raise premature birth awareness, and in support of loved ones and friends born prematurely.

March of Dimes Memphis Senior Community Director, David Silberman put an early walk fundraising estimate at just over $508,000.

Some ‘March for Babies’ participants like Fred Hampton, now 20 years old, were born prematurely themselves.

Others born premature, like 14 month old Allie Robertson, are making the walk and supporting March of Dimes an annual part of their lives; as Robertson and her aunt, Stacey Brown, took part in the walk for the second year in a row.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention Center, more than 500,000 babies are born prematurely each year, accounting for almost every 1 in 8 infants born in the United States.

A baby born before the 37 week gestation period is considered to be born premature.

March of Dimes was originally established under U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to raise awareness and funds to fight polio. The organization’s mission and focus changed to preventing premature births and birth defects in 1958.

“March for Babies” walks are held across the country each year, and have raised $2.6 billion since the first walk in 1970, to fund research and community programs that help more women have healthy, full-term pregnancies.
