OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. -- Individuals and business from all over DeSoto County including the Mississippi RiverKings took to Olive Branch Park from sundown on Friday, May 18 to sunrise Saturday, May 19 for the annual “Relay For Life” event to raise awareness and research funds for the American Cancer Society.

DeSoto County Relay For Life organizer Stephanie McGreger said the event raised $50,000 for the American Cancer Society to continue its research.

In raising those funds, this year’s event included the usual walkers doing laps around the track, and also featured a womanless beauty pageant, and dancing in the middle of the track all night long.

After the sun went down, tradition followed, lighting luminaries around the park’s track decorated with words of encouragement to those still in their fight against cancer, or to remember those who passed away in their fight.

A special luminary was lit this year in honor of Dr. Gordy Klatt, who organized the very first Relay For Life in 1985 in Seattle, Wash., who is now battling cancer.
