WEEK IN REVIEW

Goalie battle rages

The RiverKings entered training camp with no returning goalies on the roster. Instead the team brought in four new goaltenders, two with pro experience and two rookies.

Peter Di Salvo, who was with the Pensacola Ice Flyer last year, got the start in the first exhibition game Saturday. He faced 15 shots during the first half of the game and stopped them all. Adam Courchaine played in college last season, but has seven games in the AHL to his name, all with the Providence Bruins. He earned the start Sunday against Knoxville, and stopped 15 of 18 shots he faced in a period and a half.

Chris Czarnota and Colin Rundell are the two rookie goaltenders. Czarnota played the second half of Sunday's game and turned away all 10 shots he saw. Rundell took the loss Saturday, allowing three goals on 20 shots.

Last season the RiverKings had Dan McWhinney and Matt Krahn between the pipes. McWhinney played in 25 games and posted a 14-10-1 record. His 2.52 goals-against average was fourth in the league. Krahn was 16-10-3 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in 29 games.

Exhibition Game 1: RiverKings shut out in Huntsville

The Mississippi RiverKings dropped a 3-0 decision to the Huntsville Havoc in their first preseason game of the year Saturday night. After a scoreless first period the Havoc opened the scoring just over midway through the second period. The RiverKings turned over the puck in the defensive zone and Eric Alexander took advantage to give the Havoc a 1-0 lead.

Huntsville extended the lead in the third, getting goals from Justin Basso at 7:59 and Ray Ortiz at 10:20 to make it 3-0.

Peter Di Salvo started in goal for the RiverKings and stopped all 15 shots he faced while Colin Rundell replaced him and allowed three goals on 20 shots. The RiverKings were 0-for-4 on the power play.

Exhibition Game 2: RiverKings blanked by Ice Bears

For the second straight game the Mississippi RiverKings lost 3-0, this time against the Knoxville Ice Bears to close out the preseason. Knoxville struck late in the first period, with Travis Janke jamming home a loose puck with 2.5 seconds left in the frame.

The Ice Bears carried that momentum over into the second period, taking advantage with a power-play goal from Charles Baldwin just 1:09 into the second. They made it 3-0 just over seven minutes later as Ben Power beat Adam Courchaine for the final goal of the game.

Courchaine started in goal and stopped 15 of 18 shots in his period and a half. In the second half of the game Chris Czarnota faced only 10 shots, but stopped them all.
