RiverKings spotlight King of Rock and Roll™ and “Noble” charity on Elvis® Night

SOUTHAVEN—The RiverKings will be teaming up with all kinds of royalty for “Elvis® Night” on Jan. 6. The night’s festivities will include a live auction of Elvis Presley-themed game-worn jerseys and will feature nonprofit organization, “The Noble Krewe of Hathor,” which derives its name from the royal Egyptian goddess of love.

Each year the net proceeds of the funds raised through the Krewe’s projects are donated to a charity of the group’s choosing.

“We believe that The Noble Krewe of Hathor has a place in helping other charitable organizations fulfill their goals through fundraising on their behalf and promoting them to the general public,” Hathor treasurer Wade Koon said. “The more people know about these various groups, the more inclined they might be to offer financial assistance or volunteer to help them.”

This year, the Krewe chose Dream Riders Biking For Children Chapter F as the recipient of their fundraising efforts. Past recipients Church Health Center, Alzheimer’s Day Services, Memphis Oral School for the Deaf, Animal Protection Association, now known as Mid-South Spay Neuter, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Foundation, The Dream Factory of Memphis and Ronald McDonald House of Memphis.

“You just know in your heart that you are making a difference when you see pictures of a child who has had their ‘dream’ come true when they are sent on a Disney World vacation or allowed to swim with the dolphins because of the work you had done, or when you can provide much needed supplies to an Alzheimer’s facility or help provide playground equipment for children with hearing impairment,” Koon said. “Even when you provide assistance to help reduce the unwanted pet population through a spay/neuter program, you know you are making a difference.”

The Krewe conducts quarterly fundraisers and also hosts an Annual Festival in August, which is the highlight of the Krewe’s year and a final opportunity to raise money for the chosen charity.

“We have held art auctions, had murder mystery parties and silent auctions,” Koon said. “A new favorite is the Mississippi RiverKings M.V.P. (Money-Volunteers-Publicity) program that we hope to continue for years to come. And, of course, our annual Festival of Hathor. These are all beneficial to the Krewe, not only because we raise money for our selected charity, but it gives us a chance to promote the Krewe and what we do to the general public.”

Koon said that being a member of the Krewe of Hathor has provided a real creative outlet for the members, especially in coming up with new fundraising ideas.

“We get to meet and work with new and interesting people all the time and we learn a lot about other organizations and what they do,” Koon said.

The Krewe also emphasizes promoting activities sponsored or hosted by the selected charity

“That goes to our belief that raising awareness of purpose and goals of our selected charity is as important as raising money for them,” Koon said.

Membership in the Krewe of Hathor is open to any adult of good reputation within the community. There are two levels of membership, a full membership that allows voting and holding office, and an associate membership for those whose time is limited. Applications are available from any Krewe member and on the Krewe’s website at www.kreweofhathor.com.
