RiverKings soar past Ice Flyers 6-2

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Mississippi RiverKings (19-15-2) scored six straight goals and thrashed the Pensacola Ice Flyers (17-11-4), 6-2, Friday night at the Landers Center. The RiverKings have wins in six of their last seven games and 10 wins in January.

The Ice Flyers were the first ones on the board just 1:47 into the first period. Nick McParland received a pass from Adam Pawlick and fired home a one-timer from the slot that got past Peter Di Salvo for a 1-0 Pensacola lead. That only lasted for a few minutes before the RiverKings came to life and tied the game at one. Near the end of a shift Bryon Paulazzo received a pass from Devin Mantha and went down the left wing. At the top of the left circle he took a slap shot, which was kicked away by goalie Max Strang, but the rebound went right to Sean Jones at the right circle and he fired in home for a tie game at 4:28.

That was the first of four goals in the first for Mississippi. A few minutes later Joey Holka scored by chipping a loose puck over the shoulder of Strang for his second goal in two games, with Ryan Marcuz and Paul Ciarelli getting assists. With two minutes remaining in the first the RiverKings went up 3-1 when Andrew Randazzo converted a backdoor pass from Matt Whitehead, which chased Strang from the game. Andrew Flemming replaced him and he surrendered the fourth goal of the period just 14 seconds later when Luke Warner wristed a shot from the slot for his first goal with the RiverKings and a 4-1 lead.

Mississippi extended the lead with two more goals in the second. Marcuz scored at 6:53 on a snap shot from the right circle. Later in the period Linden Bahm scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 17:37 when he tapped in a pass from Whitehead, making it 6-1.

The Ice Flyers would get one back in the third with Justin Alonzo redirecting one in front of Di Salvo, which made it 6-2, but Pensacola would get no closer as the RiverKigns rolled to the 6-2 win.

Notes: The four first-period goals were the most the RiverKings have scored in a period at home this season and matched the four they scored in the third period Jan. 18 in Knoxville for the most in any period... Leo Thomas extended his scoring streak to seven games, during which he has 12 points (5g, 7a) and the RiverKings are 6-1-0... Ryan Marcuz had three points (1g, 2a) and has three straight multi-point games, giving him seven points (1g, 6a) during that stretch.
