SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Mississippi RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Derek Landmesser announced today the team has signed defensemen Kevin Brojek and Tyson Newell for the 2012-13 season. Terms and conditions were not released.

Brojek, 26, spent his first professional season in Pensacola with the Ice Flyers in 2011-12. He recorded 14 points (4G, 10A) in 56 regular season games for the SPHL runners up.

"Kevin is going to be a great addition to our defensive core," said Landmesser. "He's a good, hard-working, stay-at-home defenseman who brings size and grit to the blueline."

After a year of playing against the 'Kings, Brojek is happy to be the newest addition to the RiverKings family.

"Every time I played against the RiverKings, it was a battle," said Brojek. "I've heard nothing but great things about the organization from past and current players and I'm excited to get back on the ice."

The Sterling Heights, Mich. native enjoyed a successful three-year career with Davenport University (ACHA) prior to signing with the Ice Flyers prior to last season. In 137 collegiate games, the 6'2" 180 lbs blueliner collected 26 goals and 96 assists along with 300 penalty minutes.

Newell, 21, comes off a three-year junior career with the Melville Millionaires of the Saskachewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The 6'1" 190 lbs defenseman tallied 54 points in 57 games last season with the Millionaires and added 104 penalty minutes.

"Tyson, like Kevin, will help in solidifying our defensive core," said Landmesser. "He's a big defenseman who puts up strong offensive numbers day in and day out."

Newell agrees with Landmesser's offensive assessment.

"I like to play a fast paced game and keep the puck moving," said Newell. "In talking to players who have been there before, the fans really support the players and that's something I'm looking forward to being a part of."

RiverKings season tickets are on sale now for the 2012-13 season. Season tickets start at just $9 per game and are available by calling the front office at 662-342-1755.
