RiverKings sign forwards Harrington, Morton

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Mississippi RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Derek Landmesser announced today that the RiverKings have re-signed forward Matt Harrington and signed forward Rob Morton for training camp. Terms and conditions were not released.

Harrington, 23, returns to the RiverKings for his third season with the club. In 2013-14, the 5-foot-11, 193-pound forward was fifth on the team with 39 points (14g, 25a) while playing in all 56 regular season games, just one of four players to do so on last year's squad. In 92 career regular season games with the RiverKings, Harrington has 73 points (29g, 44a).

"'Harry' is a very responsible, two-way player who has been one of our most consistent players the past year and a half," Landmesser said. "I am expecting him to have a very big year for us."

The North Port, Florida native had a plus-7 rating during the 2013-14 season for the RiverKings and his four game-winning goals tied for the team lead.

"I'm excited to return to Mississippi, a place where I've really been able to develop as an impact player under Coach Landmesser," Harrington said. "This year will be a big year not only for me, but also for the team. I believe we will be strong contenders for the organization's first SPHL championship."

Morton, 26, finished his collegiate career at Utica College in 2013-14, posting 11 points (3g, 8a) in 22 games. The first-year pro finished his three-year career at Utica with 45 points in 69 games.

"Rob comes highly recommended by his college coach in Utica who said he can play in all situations and is a game changer," Landmesser said.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward played his junior hockey with the Syracuse Stars (EJHL) where he racked up 128 points (61g, 67a) in 132 games.

"I'm eager to begin my professional career and to have the opportunity to join the RiverKings," Morton said. "The RiverKings were one of the top teams in the SPHL last season and I am looking forward to coming into camp trying to contribute this season."

The RiverKings open their 2014-15 quest for the President's Cup on October 24 and 25 at the Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. Receive a ticket to both games that weekend starting at $17 and get a free t-shirt. Groups of 15 or more who purchase tickets will receive complimentary tickets to a future RiverKings home game. You folks will be pleased with Rob Morton's work effort. I enjoyed his skills for the last few years as he played for Utica College. Best of luck to Rob.
