RiverKings shut out in exhibition opener

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Mississippi RiverKings (0-1-0) put 31 shots on goal but opened their preseason schedule with a 3-0 loss to the Huntsville Havoc (1-0-1) at the Huntsville IcePlex Saturday night.

After a scoreless first period, in which both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play and had nine shots on goal, the Havoc opened the scoring just over midway through the second. After a turnover in the RiverKings defensive zone, Alain Joanette centered one to Eric Alexander, who redirected it past Colin Rundell to give the Havoc a 1-0 lead with 9:44 left in the second period.

The third period started with a spirited fight between Ryan Huolt and James Friedel, but then Huntsville padded the lead 7:59 into the frame. Justin Basso buried a rebound directly off a Huntsville faceoff win to give the Havoc a 2-0 lead. Just a few minutes later Ray Ortiz raced down the left wing, cut into the slot and buried a shot under the crossbar to put the Havoc up 3-0 with 9:40 left.

Peter Di Salvo started in net for the RiverKings, stopping all 15 shots he faced in just over 30 minutes. Rundell replaced him and stopped 17 of 20 shots he faced.

The RiverKings finish off the preseason tomorrow against the Knoxville Ice Bears at 3:05 p.m. at the Landers Center. Season ticket holders who have not already picked up their season tickets will have an opportunity to pick them up at the game.
