RiverKings Readers ready for Year 2

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Mississippi RiverKings, the longest continually operating professional sports franchise in the greater Memphis area, are excited to launch the second year of the RiverKings Readers program, presented by Belhaven University. RiverKings Readers is open to all schools and classrooms in the Mid-South.

The RiverKings Readers program, which was created last summer, is an incentive based reading program designed to benefit local schools and their students. Teachers and schools can sign up for the RiverKings Readers program, which officially begins October 1 and runs through March 1, by visiting riverkings.com/RKReaders

Each student who participates in the RiverKings Readers program receives a specially designed bookmark and the classroom/school receives a large player cutout that is used to visually track progress to a classroom/school reading goal. Teachers will track their students' reading hours with reading logs and submit the totals at the end of each month to the RiverKings.

Classrooms who surpass a monthly goal of 50 hours read will be entered into a drawing to win a RiverKings player/mascot visit. The winning classroom will also be recognized at a RiverKings home game. All students who participate in the RiverKings Readers program will also be invited to attend RiverKings Readers Night on Tuesday, March 15. The overall winner of the RiverKings Readers program will be announced at the game and students from the winning classroom will have the opportunity to take part in an on-ice event that night.

In its first year, the RiverKings Readers program had over 8,000 local students participate and helped facilitate over 160,000 hours of reading in our local schools.

The Mississippi RiverKings are proud to be the longest, continually operating sports franchise in the Memphis area, as they begin their 24th season in 2015. Ticket packages for the 24th season of RiverKings hockey start at just $24.75 by calling 662-342-1755. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, October 23 at the Landers Center and groups of 15 or more who purchase a group for that night will receive an identical group package to any other regular season game for free. For more information, check out riverkings.com.
