RiverKings open 2016 with loss in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Mississippi RiverKings (13-6-3) scored first, but the Knoxville Ice Bears (9-14-3) scored two quick second-period goals en route to a 4-2 victory on Friday night in Knoxville.

The RiverKings took the lead early in the first period. Michael Beaudry beat Knoxville netminder Bryan Hince to put the RiverKings on top 1-0 just 5:08 into the first period. Charles Mosey and Dean Willmott assisted on Beaudry's third goal of the year.

In the second, the Ice Bears scored two goals early. Todd Hosmer found a rebound from Trevor Hertz and put it past Garrett Sheehan to tie the game at one 3:35 into the second. Just a minute later, Knoxville took the lead. Adam Sedlak's shot from the blueline was deflected by Andrew Banazza and found it's way through traffic and beat Sheehan to give the Ice Bears a 2-1 lead.

Late in the second, the RiverKings tied it up. Luke Kasteel notched his first goal as a RiverKings as he deflected a Mike Grace shot to the back of the net to tie the game at two with just over five minutes left in the middle frame.

In the third, Knoxville retook the lead early. Corey Fulton redirected a shot from Brad Pawlowski and beat Sheehan to give the Ice Bears a 3-2 lead. Garrett Vermeersch tallied the empty-net goal to give Knoxville the 4-2 victory.

Garrett Sheehan (0-2-2) took the loss after stopping 20 of 23 shots against. Bryan Hince (8-8-1) stopped 18 of 20 shots in win. Both teams were held scoreless on five power play opportunities.

The RiverKings return to Concorde Career College Ice on Saturday, January 2 for Elvis Night.
