RiverKings Hockey Operations staff earn SPHL honors

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The Southern Professional Hockey League today announced the RiverKings' Rick Hanlon as the league's Athletic Trainer of the Year and Jim Chesnut as the Sportstape Equipment Manager of the Year.

The winners were determined by a vote of the league’s equipment managers and athletic trainers.

"The players and I are very happy for both 'Rusty' and 'Chesty' for being recognized by their peers," RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Derek Landmesser said. "I know the hard work and countless hours both of these guys put in and the pride they have in their positions. They both make my job and all of the players' jobs way easier. They are truly the unsung heroes of our team."

Hanlon, now in his 11th season with the RiverKings, received his B.S. in Sports Medicine from Missouri Baptist College. Before joining the RiverKings, Hanlon spent two seasons with the UHL’s Missouri River Otters as assistant trainer from 1999-2001. He was then head trainer with the Roanoke Express of the ECHL from 2001-2004, before returning to the River Otters during the 2004-2005 season.

A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Chesnut is currently in his second season with the RiverKings. Previously, he was the equipment manager for the Lowell Lock Monsters (AHL) from 2004 to 2006. He then became the equipment manager with the Oklahoma City Blazers (CHL) before taking the same position with the Augusta RiverHawks (SPHL) for the 2011-12 season. After his one season with Augusta, Chesnut returned to the CHL as equipment manager for the Tulsa Oilers for the 2012-13 season. Earlier this season, Chesnut was honored by the RiverKings for working his 1,000th professional game.

The RiverKings open their 2016 President's Cup Playoff schedule on Wednesday night at home against Louisiana. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Ticket information is available at RiverKings.com/playofftickets or by calling 662-342-1755.
