Southaven, Miss--The Mississippi RiverKings started their first winning streak of the year today as they defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths 6-4 at the Desoto Civic Center.

Trevor Karasiewicz got the RiverKings on the board early as he pushed on past goaltender Andrew Loewen to put the RiverKings up 1-0 just 1:11 into the game. Ten minutes later, Columbus’ Mitch Wall ripped a shot over the top of Scott Darling to tie the game up at one goal apiece.

Columbus would strike again early in the second as Orrin Hergott converted on a breakaway with a backhander over Darling to give Columbus a 2-1 edge. The RiverKings battled back as a Chris Pontes shot deflected off the leg of Kevin Fukala, tying the game at two. Four and a half minutes later, Rob Sich took a Nick Vandenbeld pass and slid it through the legs of Loewen to give the RiverKings a lead they would not relinquish. Mike Tuomi scored twice in five minutes to put the RiverKings up 5-2 going into the third.

Early in the third, Tom Maldonado scored as he floated a shot through traffic and past Darling to bring the Cottonmouths within two. But Mike Tuomi would bury a breakaway opportunity for his third goal of the night. Nifty passing by the Cottonmouths set up a Jordan Braid goal late in the final frame, but it would not be enough as the RiverKings won their second straight in as many nights.

Scott Darling picked up his third win of the season, stopping 32 of 36 shots against him, improving to 3-3 on the year. Andrew Loewen turned aside 27 of 33 shots and fell to 4-3.
