RiverKings coach, mascot are champions of cheer

By:Whitley Rives

RiverKings mascot Sheldon the turtle, long-time RiverKings fan Barbara Gagliano and RiverKings Head Coach Derek Landmesser share a hug in Gagliano’s garage on April 24 when the hockey team members made a surprise visit to Gagliano’s house at the request of her sister, Stephanie Marks. Gagliano has been sick for quite some time and didn’t get to make many games this past season, and Marks thought it might cheer her up to see some representatives from her favorite hockey team. The dynamic duo brought video-taped copies of two games, the RiverKings “Face Off Field Trip” games sponsored by Belhaven University and played during the day for area students, and also copies of this year’s Face Off Field Trip workbook for kids (full of games and questions using hockey to teach educational principles), and a noisemaker. “Since Ms. Barbara couldn’t make it to the games, we brought the games to her,” Landmesser said.
