RiverKings' Brad Barone nominated SPHL Player of the Week

HUNTERSVILLE, NC - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Brad Barone of the Mississippi RiverKings is the Bauer Player of the Week for January 16-22.

Barone went 2-0-0, with a 1.00 goals against average, a .967 save percentage and one shutout as the RiverKings moved to within two points of second place in the SPHL standings.

On Friday, the Medfield, MA native made 35 saves, including 16 in the third period, as the RiverKings traveled to Evansville for the first game of a home-and-home series and defeated the Thunderbolts 3-2.  On Saturday, Barone stopped all 24 shots in Mississippi’s 2-0 win over Evansville, recording his first shutout of the season.

Now in his second professional season, Barone currently leads all SPHL goaltenders with three shootout wins and is second in both shootout percentage (stopping 16 of 17 shots faced) and minutes played (1173:54).  He also ranks third in saves (541) and tied for fourth in wins (10).  As a rookie, Barone went 11-10-1 for the Louisiana IceGators, posting a 2.43 goals against average and .928 save percentage with one shutout.  Before turning pro, Barone spent four seasons at Boston College.  As a senior, Barone earned his first collegiate victory, defeating Brown 4-1 at the Ledyard Classic on January 2, 2015.
