RiverKings and IceGators play for third straight game

Game 10: Mississippi RiverKings (3-5-1) vs. Louisiana IceGators (6-5-0)

The Mississippi RiverKings and Louisiana IceGators finish off their home-and-home series and play for the third straight game Wednesday night at the Cajundome in Lafayette. This RiverKings won the first game, 7-2, last Friday and the IceGators bounced back with a 1-0 win yesterday in the RiverKings Face Off Field Trip game.

The IceGators begin a four-game homestand tonight. After the RiverKings, Louisiana has Thanksgiving off then hosts Huntsville Friday and Saturday.

After visiting Louisiana the RiverKings play their second home-and-home series of the week Friday and Saturday against Columbus. The RiverKings visit the Cottonmouths Friday and then play host to them Saturday at the Landers Center.

Last time out

The RiverKings and IceGators played for the second straight game yesterday, but this time it was at 10:35 a.m. as part of the RiverKings Face Off Field Trip. Despite 39 shots on goal, the RiverKings fell to the IceGators, 1-0.

The game's only goal was scored late in the first period. With the teams skating 4-on-4 the IceGators got the puck in the offensive zone. RiverKings goalie Adam Courchaine poke checked a centering pass, but the puck wound up on the stick of Clark Byczynski, who blasted it home for a 1-0 lead with 1:13 left in the first.

The RiverKings dominated the final two periods, outshooting the IceGators 31-13 over the final 40 minutes, but Andrew Flemming stopped them all. He was aided with two posts, but he made a glove save on a Matt Whitehead breakaway in the third period to preserve the shutout.

Scouting the IceGators

The IceGators are 6-5-0 in 11 games this season. With 12 points they are in fourth place in the SPHL, five points ahead of the RiverKings, although the RiverKings have two games in hand.

Jeremy Boyer leads the IceGators with 10 points (4g, 6a) in 11 games. Benjamin Rubin is second with nine points (2g, 7a), but both players have been held off the scoresheet in two games against the RiverKings. Adam Stuart (3g, 5a) is third with eight points, including an assist on the only goal yesterday.

In goal Marco De Filippo has appeared in seven games and he has a 4-3-0 record. He has a 2.60 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. He allowed three goals on six shots against the RiverKings before being replaced Friday night. Andrew Flemming is 2-2-0 in five games. He has a 2.70 goals-against average and .921 save percentage. He allowed the final four goals against the RiverKings Friday, stopping 33 shots in the process, then made 39 saves in a shutout win yesterday.

Special Teams

Louisiana’s power play is fifth in the league at 14.7% through 10 games, going 5-for-34. They are 0-for-3 in two games against the RiverKings. The IceGators have done most of their damage on the power play at home, where they are 4-for-13 (30.8%). On the road they are just 1-for-21 (4.8%).

The RiverKings were 0-for-2 on the power play yesterday and are 0-for-4 in the two games against the IceGators. They are now 3-for-34 (8.8%) on the season, which places them seventh.

The IceGators have given up the third-most power-play goals (7) this season and their penalty kill is ranked fifth in the league at 86.3% (44-for-51). Only one team has been shorthanded more than the IceGators’ 51 times, although they have been shorthanded just twice in both games against the RiverKings.

Mississippi is sixth in the SPHL on the penalty kill. After killing the only IceGators power play yesterday the RiverKings are now 21-for-25 (84.0%) on the kill this season.
