SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi Surge (14-12-4) notched two goals in both the first and second periods to hold off the Mississippi RiverKings (14-14-5) 5-2 at the Lander’s Center Friday night.

The Surge got on the board first just three minutes into the game when Jarkko Leppanen beat Matthew Krahn with a backhand to put the opposing team up by one. The Surge added to that lead at the 5:40 mark of the first period when Jay Silvia, alone on the breakaway put one past Krahn five-hole. But the RiverKings cut the lead by one. Todd Hosmer intercepted a pass in the Surge zone to beat Kiefer Smiley to trail the Surge 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

The Surge extended their lead by two in the second period. Silivia notched his second goal of the night 11:18 into second period of play. Brandon Kosolofsky put the Surge up by three when he beat Krahn high blocker side with 29.7 remaining in the second period.

In the final frame of play, the RiverKings cut the Surge lead by one with a wrist shot from Mike MacDonald, assisted by Todd Hosmer and Kory Helowka, cutting the deficit to 4-2. But, the Surge sealed the deal with 1:05 remaining in the game when Joe Harcharik netted an empty net goal.

Matthew Krahn (8-8-2) took the loss after stopping 25 of 30 shots against. Kiefer Smiley (6-8-3) picked up the win after turning aside 33 of 35 shots.
