SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- The Mississippi Surge built an early three goal lead that was too much for the RiverKings, as they failed to bounce back in a 3-1 loss Friday night.

The Surge offensively dominated the first period of play netting three goals on 17 shots on net. The first goal of the night came 2:18 into the first period. Tommy Lange’s quick shot off the faceoff gave the Surge the early 1-0 lead. The Surge's second goal came four minutes later when Kyle VanderMale connected on a shot assisted by BJ Crum and Branden Kosolofsky. Adam Stuart notched the third goal and final shot faced by RiverKings' starting netminder Matthew Krahn as David Wilson replaced the rookie goalie as RiverKings went into the first intermission down three.

The RiverKings cut the Surge lead by one with a goal 7:28 into the second period. Jeremy Dawes collected a rebound out in front on a Steven Kaunisto shot, but that was the only goal the RiverKings could pick up in the contest as they fell 3-1.

Matt Krahn took the loss for the RiverKings stopping three of six shots on net. David Wilson stopped 35 of 35 shots against in relief of Krahn. Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley picked up his first win back from his five game suspension, stopping 36 of 37 shots on goal.
