Noah’s Gift 5K racing toward Oct. 13 start

On your mark, get set….Skate! The Noah’s Gift Memorial 5K Run-Walk-Skate is calling all manner of participants, including roller bladers and skaters, to participate in the “NG5K” race at 8:55 a.m. on Oct. 13 in Hernando.

Like many 5K races, this year’s event will feature professional electronic timing, medals for top runners in each age category, and fun awards for everyone.

NG5K race participants will receive a goody bag that includes a long-sleeved dri-fit, moisture-wicking performance T-shirt sponsored by Belhaven University, a statement wristband sponsored by Farm Bureau/FarmBureau agent Mike McLendon, and a voucher to the RiverKings Hockey Home Opener.

However, in addition to its special start for roller bladers, the Noah’s Gift 5K differs from other races in that it’s “teen-centric,” says race Co-Chair Lisa Beene.

“One thing we really like is that kids get to be involved with every stage of this race, from start to finish,” Beene says. “We have a Teen Co-Chair on our Executive Committee; we have kids apply for Noah’s Gift grants; and we have teen volunteers who help with grass-roots and door-to-door publicity, race-day logistics, and run, walk or skate the race for service hours.”

The race is the major source of public funding for the Noah’s Gift Endowment Fund, which is housed at The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. To sweeten the deal, The Community Foundation will add a 25 percent match to all net proceeds of the 5K event.

Noah’s Gift grants, inspired by the life and times of 16-year-old Noah Costa, make extraordinary experiences possible for young people ages 13-19 with the intention of bringing joy and inspiring philanthropy.

For race participants’ convenience, goody bags can be picked up prior to the race on specific days at Buon Cibo restaurant, Fillin Station Grille or the Bank Plus Sunset Lawn Pickup at Maddox Foundation (call Community Foundation for details).
