SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The RiverKings and the Horn Lake American Legion Post 134 teamed up recently to judge the 2013 American Legion High School Oratorical Contest.

On January 14, five high school students from the Mid-South area participated in the
“Constitutional Speech Contest,” a scholarship program for 9th- 12th graders that seeks to promote a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution and citizens’ rights.

RiverKings Community Development Director and Chief Petty Officer Linda Rixie, who has served 22 honorable years for the U.S. Navy and completed three tours, including two tours to Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, was a member of the judges’ panel and presented the contestants with tickets to a RiverKings game of their choice.

Contestants prepared speeches relating to the U.S. Constitution with an emphasis on a citizen’s duties and obligations to our government. A panel of five judges presented this year’s winner, who will go on to compete in the North Mississippi area contest and have the chance to compete nationally for $138,000 in scholarship funding.

The RiverKings return to the Landers Center on Saturday, January 26 at 7:05 p.m. for Belhaven University Pack the House Night. Tickets for the game are $5 off with $4 of every ticket going to the United Way of the Mid-South.
