Ice Bears down RiverKings in OT

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Knoxville Ice Bears overcame a 4-2 deficit and scored 1:48 into overtime to defeat the Mississippi RiverKings, 5-4, in the team's only exhibition game before the regular season starts on Friday, Oct. 23.

The back-and-forth affair got started when the Ice Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead at 7:53 as Andrew Bonazza scored on starting goalie Peter Di Salvo. The RiverKings answered back 43 seconds later as Mark Constantine wristed a shot past Garrett Sheehan from the left circle to even the score at one. It stayed like that into the second period.

The RiverKings jumped ahead early in the second when Michael Beaudry fired home a shot on a feed from Matt Beer just 1:03 into the period to put the RiverKings up 2-1. Zack Larue tied the game a few minutes later when he redirected a pass in the slot past Di Salvo. The game remained tied until the 15:01 mark of the second when Mark Pustin slammed a one-timer past Sheehan. Mike Grace pinched in to keep the puck alive along the left wall and swept a pass to the right circle, where Pustin fired in his first goal with the RiverKings. Two minutes later Andrew Meredith scored his first, snapping a shot from the left circle after a feed from Beaudry and giving the RiverKings a 4-2 lead into the third.

In the third the Ice Bears pulled back within one as Larue took advantage of a miscue behind the RiverKings net. A loose puck jumped past the stick of goalie Matt Grogan and found the stick of Larue, who jammed it into a wide open net to make it 4-3. Later in the period Louie Educate beat Grogan to tie the game at four and force overtime.

In the 3-on-3 overtime Jide Idowu poked the puck away from a RiverKings defender in the offensive zone and turned that into a breakaway, which he converted to give the Ice Bears a 5-4 win.
