Higgins returns to RiverKings blueline

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Mississippi RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Derek Landmesser announced today that the team has re-signed defenseman Sam Higgins ahead of the 2016-17 season. Terms and conditions were not released.

"'Higgs' had a very solid rookie season and only got better as the season went on," said Landmesser. "He moves the puck really well and has very good vision. With it being his second year, I only see him improving and getting better as a player."

Higgins, 26, returns to the RiverKings for his sophomore season after appearing in 53 games in his rookie year. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound native of Calgary, Alberta posted two goals and 16 assists in the regular season and added a goal and an assist in four playoff games.

"Last year I was really impressed with the entire organization," said Higgins. "After my rookie season, the biggest thing I took away is the need to come in ready to go every night and be consistant. I'm looking forward to next season with the ultimate goal of winning it all."

Higgins joined the RiverKings after a four-year career at St. Norbert College (NCHA) where he won two NCAA Division III National Championships. He tallied 48 points (7G, 41A) in 101 career college games for the Green Knights.
