Four-goal second period lifts RiverKings over Mayhem, 5-2

Macon, Ga. - Dean Willmott had three points and the Mississippi RiverKings (6-2-0) threw 44 shots on net as they knocked off the Macon Mayhem (2-3-2) for the third time this season with a 5-2 victory on the road.

After a scoreless first period, the offense exploded in the second. The RiverKings got on the board first 3:26 into the middle frame when Dean Willmott, returning from a penalty, scooped up a loose puck inside the Macon zone and slid the puck past a diving Garrett Bartus to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. But the lead did not last long. Just over four minutes later Matt Grogan made an initial save on Shawn Skelly, but Lucas LaBelle spun and buried the rebound through the legs of Grogan to tie the game.

The back and forth continued three minutes later when Devin Mantha tallied his league-leading ninth point of the year when his slap shot beat Bartus through the legs for a power play goal to put the RiverKings back on top. The Mayhem answered back less than two minutes later. Skelly redirected a Curtis Megginson shot for a power play goal of his own to tie the game at two at 12:47 into the period.

The game would not stay tied for long. With the teams battling for possession in the Macon zone, Charles Mosey pushed a pass to Mike Grace who one-timed a shot past the Mayhem netminder to give the RiverKings a 3-2 lead with just over five minutes left in the second. The RiverKings added then added to their lead when Mark Pustin buried a rebound past a diving Bartus to give the RiverKings a two-goal lead going into the third period. Neither team could take control of the third period, but it was the RiverKings who put the game out of reach when Michael Beaudry found Ben Rubin on a pass across the crease to give the RiverKings the 5-2 victory, their third over the Mayhem in the early season.

Matt Grogan (3-0-0) picked up the win after stopping 23 of 25 shots against. Garrett Bartus (2-2-1) took the loss after being peppered with 44 shots and turning aside 39. The RiverKings went 2-5 against the league's number one penalty kill. The Mayhem were 1-4 with the man-advantage.
