Defense Heats Up in Week Two

HERNANDO, Miss.- Following a high scoring first week, defensive strategies played a big role in week two of the Jr. StreetKings season.

The first match-up of week two featured the Super Drugs Stars (1-1), who sought revenge for their week one blowout loss to the Gladiators (2-0). The game began much like last week, with the Gladiators dominating the first half, taking a 6-1 lead. At halftime, however, Coach Jamie Berryhill lit a fire under his team. The Cleary brothers, Hunter and Colton, led the assault with four goals and one assist to close the gap. Unfortunately for the Stars, the combination of Austin Wiggins and Zack White proved too strong as the Gladiators squeaked out the 10-9 win.

Game two of week two began as a tight game between the undefeated Gladiators (3-0) and the Sharks (0-2), sponsored by W.E. Middleton, Jr. dds. Both teams had plenty of scoring chances during the first half, converting on five per team. Following halftime, the game remained tight until The Gladiators’ saw their second line erupt for five second half goals. The Sharks attempted a late rally, but it fell short and the Gladiators extended their winning streak to four.

Game three featured the second place battle between the Sharks (0-3) and the Stars (1-2). The Sharks were led in the first half by Carson Middleton and Ethan Lyons, who combined for four goals and one assist. In the second half, the Stars outscored the Sharks 7-6, but it wasn't enough to make up for the slow start as the Sharks earned their first win of the season and moved into a tie for second place.

Next week, we will see if the Stars and Sharks can finally take down the Gladiators and which team will take sole possession of second place. Each game is played at the Hernando Civic Center and begins at 6:30 p.m.
