Sheldon Shakes His Shell Tail at 'Avery Zumbathon' Fundraiser

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Mid-South cheerleaders, tumblers and gymnasts headed to Southaven Arena for “Avery Zumbathon” on Saturday, April 7.

Mississippi RiverKings mascot, Sheldon, also came out to get his Zumba on and to support the fundraiser of a local girl whose life forever changed in January of this year.

Thirteen-year-old Avery Downing was paralyzed while practicing her gymnastics routine at River City Gymnastics in Cordova.

Jessica Clowney, “Avery Zumbathon” Event Coordinator, heard about Avery and her family and wanted to do something to help. She thought it’d be great to get other gymnasts and cheerleaders together to do something nice for this Avery, and what it turned it to was much bigger than she expected.

Clowney’s early fundraising estimates put the event at raising more than $6,000 through the event from people registering to Zumba, buying t-shirts and other donations from Mid-South business and organizations.

Sheldon joined other area gymnasts and cheerleaders to raise money for local 13-year-old gymnast Avery Downing, who was paralyzed earlier this year while practicing her routine. Through the registration fee, t-shirt sales and other donations, ‘Avery Zumbathon’ Event Coordinator estimates more than $6,000 was raised for Avery.
