Ryan Held netted the game-winning goal as the final shooter in a five-round shootout that ended a 2-1 win for the Mississippi RiverKings over the Americans in Central Hockey League action in Allen, Texas on Saturday, March 6th.
The win stopped a two-game losing streak for the RiverKings on their current four-game road trip.
Allen opened the first period scoring on a goal from Bruce Graham, his 28th of the season at 11:55 for a 1-0 lead for the Americans.
However, the RiverKings tied the game nearly five minutes later on a goal from Louis Dumont. The goal came as Derek Landmesser fed a breaking Dumont into the offensive zone and he beat the Allen goaltender at 16:11 for his 20th goal of the year. Dane Marshall also assisted on the goal.
There was no scoring in the second period, although the Americans outshot the RiverKings by a 11-9 margin. Mississippi failed to score in four power play chances in the period, including one two-man advantage for about 90 seconds.
There was also no scoring in the third period and overtime, setting up the shootout session, where the RiverKings outscored the Americans 3-2.

Neither team scored on the power play as each team had six chances. Allen outshot the RiverKings 36-23 for the contest.
Kyle McNulty was the winning goaltender for Mississippi in his first start as he made 35 saves. McNulty improved his overall season record to 7-15-1. Chris Whitley took the loss with a 21-save effort for Allen, seeing his record fall to 28-8-4.
With the win, the RiverKings improved their season record to 28-23-7 for 63 points. Allen falls to 38-15-5 for 81 points in the standings. |
